The carom game has a special board which is generally square in shape, has 19 coins including 9 black coins and 9 white coins along with only one read color coin.

A striker is mainly used to hit the coins and a carom board powder is used for improving the smoothness of that board that enables the game play to be faster and smoother and also it increases the life span of the carom board. Only four players can get involved in this carom game at a time. However the time before the rules were being created, the people played either as individuals and thus allowed three to four members to take part in the game. A white color coin carried two points and a black color coin carried only one point with the red color coin carrying five points. A red is followed with any another coin. At last, the person who has scored maximum number of points will be declared as a winner.
This format and style of this carom game play changed with the rules directed by ICF. The rules defines that either two persons can play as an opponents in a single encounter or four persons considering as teams of two persons can play a game doubles match. They can toss with the help of a person called umpire who hides one white and one black coin in his hands and whoever selects white starts the game. The rule is very easy, a single team follows a set of 9 coins and they want to get all 9 coins from that set along with one red coin. They cannot end of their all coins while red coin is still in the play and when the opponent person has only one coin leftover from their complete set along with the red coin, you should not end off their coin.
